Who Maeve Is

14 years of real-world experience in making leisure accessible for older adults

The Beginning

In 2010, Maeve started as a community health worker with Cork Health Service Executive. She worked directly with older residents across Munster, and that's when she noticed something troubling: there weren't many genuinely accessible leisure options for seniors. The fancy gyms didn't fit. Expensive activities weren't realistic. But the real gap? Quality outdoor time in local communities wasn't being properly supported.

That gap stuck with her. It sparked something bigger.

University & Research

She pursued formal study at University College Cork, earning a degree in Social Gerontology. Her thesis? The role of gentle outdoor exercise in reducing social isolation among seniors. It wasn't theoretical. She was already seeing the real effects in the community — people opening up, moving more regularly, feeling less alone. The research just confirmed what she already knew from working with older adults directly.

centurionbollard & Specialisation

Three years ago, Maeve joined centurionbollard Ltd as Senior Wellness & Leisure Correspondent. She's become the go-to expert for articles on senior-friendly walking routes, particularly across East Cork. Her knowledge of Youghal's heritage sites, the boardwalk, and the harbour town is genuine—she regularly walks these routes with local senior groups, observing what actually works. She knows which paths have good benches. She knows which routes have the most interesting stories to share. She knows the community.

Philosophy

Maeve believes quality leisure shouldn't require expensive equipment or extreme fitness. Good outdoor time should be thoughtfully designed, freely accessible, and celebrate both movement and local heritage. Her writing draws from three things: academic research she trusts, practical observation from being there, and genuine relationships with Cork's senior community. That combination is why her work resonates.
